Propagating and growing rosemary plants in your home can be a rewarding and relatively simple experience if you pay attention to a few basic steps.
You will need:
- Suitable pots
- Loose, good quality soil
- Worm castings to improve soil fertility
- Perlite or vermiculite to improve soil drainage (OPTIONAL)
- Powdered or liquid fertilizer, or even cinnamon as a rooting aid
How to achieve propagation?
- Fill the pot with loose, good-quality soil.
- Add worm castings to enrich the soil with essential nutrients. (OPTIONAL STEP: Add perlite or vermiculite – these are not strictly necessary for rosemary propagation, but they help with it).
- Select a firm, healthy stem from the mother plant. Cut the stem with a sharp tool, making sure not to cut too far below the base of the stem.
- Remove some of the foliage from the stem to reduce water loss during the rooting process, and remove the lower leaves from the stem that will be inside the pot.
- Apply rooting powder or liquid (or cinnamon) to the base of the stem to stimulate root development.
- Insert the prepared stem into the pot and make sure it is firmly planted in the soil.
- Place the pot in a location with indirect light and ensure the soil remains slightly moist, but not saturated. Avoid overwatering to prevent rot.
